Sterling Peterson - respectful humility for nature
Eco Collaborations
with REZ13 Productions
REZ13 Productions is forming collaborations with like-minded orgs, using our “radical imaginations” to upset the status quo. Through our storytelling we will be putting the spotlight on some of the First Nations people of the Okanagan Valley - of which there are approximately 19,000 band members.
Fresh and interesting storytelling with a baseline goal of making a difference on planet Earth
iniipoka (Sterling Peterson)
Central to some of our stories is Sterling, (iniipoka) who is a member of the Lower Similkameen Indian Band (LSIB) which is part of the Syilx Nation. Peterson is a smelqmix, Syilx, and Siksikaitsitapi activist who lives in the Similkameen Valley within the Syilx territory.
iniipoka, who feels that as human beings we need to reconnect with our natural world, was chosen to represent First Nations Canadian youth as a Ring of Fire Cohort at the 2023 COP28 conference in Dubai. “The fate of humanity is at stake” says Peterson. “Climate change is affecting our river and salmon which is our lifeline. Our water temperatures in the summer are so high that it depletes the water of oxygen and fish die off in masses."
At REZ13 ‘Stories from Indian Country’ are adventures focused on how Peterson and others like him are living with courage and authenticity… and finding their way back to nature, and their culture through the traditional ways.
Horse culture is also a big part of the story and is a focus of one of our documentaries, Horse Culture as Medicine. In this film, Sterling will be working with local “horse wranglers” who employ traditional training methods… they are the last of what one of them describes as a “dyin’ breed”. Preview of film to be released next year…
Sterling talks about the valley where he lives and was raised.
As a representative of the Lower Similkameen Indian Band, Sterling has been immersed in different programs designed to improve the natural grasslands of the Southern BC desert region, by eradicating invasive species and promoting the growth of the native plants.
Video is a rough cut of a few of Sterling’s thoughts.
